Why Travel With Young Kids When They Won’t Remember It?

We often hear people say, “Why travel when the kids are young, they won’t get anything out of it?”. I understand where people are coming from when they ask this, but I disagree. From an adult’s perspective we travel to learn about history or culture, see the sights and take a break from our everyday lives. These are things that may not be relevant to a young child.

The way young children live is very different to adults. Kids live in the moment. They enjoy where they are, when they are there. Simple as that. And if they don’t enjoy it, they will let you know too! This way of living is enviable and something many adults aspire towards. For this reason, kids can be great travellers. Children throw themselves into situations; getting involved in learning new things, trying new food and making friends without even speaking the language! I recall our kids playing ‘Hide and Seek’ with our young German relatives who didn’t speak a word of English. And more recently, playing Italian schoolyard games with our new friends (with the help of Google Translate!!!)

Children may not recall all the places, attractions and facts along the way, but they are gathering important life experiences that make up who they are. They are seeing how different people look, live and behave around the world. They will be more open to others who look, speak or dress differently because they have experienced diversity. Children will value the opportunities they have been given as they meet others who may not have as much money, food or toys as them. They will be more adaptive to living in different environments, relying less on the comforts and routines of home; being able to sleep, eat and play pretty much anywhere! This all shapes them into the person they become. How can this not be of benefit?

This is not the way all children will travel, of course. Just like some adults not everyone sees the appeal of a nomadic life, but this is certainly our experience with our children!

What are your thoughts? Do you see the benefits of travelling with young children?
