We love getting out in nature and keeping active, so climbing mountains appeals to us. Thankfully our kids are good climbers. They love the challenge and the view at the top is always REWARDING. It’s also a great opportunity to discuss the nature we see along the way (trees, flowers, rocks, wildlife), encourage good stepping techniques (Daddy is always saying “3 points of contact at all times!”) and generally pushing personal limits to experience success. There are so many amazing mountains to climb on the Sunny Coast, you are spoilt for choice if this is your thing!
FOR FIRST TIME HIKERS
If it’s your child’s first time hiking up a mountain then we suggest Emu Mountain in Coolum Beach. It’s 1.6 kilometres return, not too steep and less crowded than its neighbour, Mt Coolum. It has a number of rocky outcrops which the kids love to climb and there’s a beautiful view of the coast from the top. Try to go mid-year in the cooler months or head out in the early morning, as the sun can be strong in the middle of the day (and we want your children to ENJOY the experience, not feel like they are in the Sahara Desert!!!!)
Another beginner option is Mt Tinbeerwah, which is further north and provides 360 degree views from the fire tower at the top.
HARDER OPTIONS
If you love the stair-climber at the gym then Mt Beerburrum is for you! It’s 3.5 kilometres return, is paved all the way but on a steep incline so expect a great bottom workout!! It feels like you are walking on a broken escalator the whole way up!!! Definitely not for first-time children hikers, but if you can get them to the top the downhill will be pretty EASY!!!
Mt Ngungun (pronounced “noo noo”) is our family’s favourite climb as it is sheltered by trees most of the way, has interesting landmarks like a cave to break up the walk, and a spectacular shuffle across the summit if you’re brave enough! And the view of the other Glasshouse Mountains from the top is absolutely amazing! It’s 2.8 kilometres return so your kids would need to be up for it! We love stopping for a snack at the peak.
We hope this has inspired you to try some of the awesome mountains the Sunshine Coast has to offer. For more info on bushwalks on the Sunshine Coast.
